Kit Masx | How to Use Our Paint Masks

In these short tutorials, our friend Brett from @HammerheadModelMaking, demonstrates how to apply squadron code and insignia masks on a 1/48 Spitfire Mk.I.

These comprehensive videos break down the basic steps to applying and removing Kit Masx paint masks and showcase how easy these masks are to use.

Our paint masks are the secret weapon you need to produce award-worthy works of art. 🥇🥇🥇

A Step-by Step Guide for Application of Main Marking Paint Masks

We include transfer tape with all main marking sets. Here's a breakdown of the simple steps to apply and remove our paint masks.

  1. Prepare the Surface: Ensure the surface of your scale model is clean and dry. Any dust or grease can prevent the mask from adhering properly.
  2. Cut the Transfer Tape (included with your Kit Masx set): Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the paint mask.
  3. Apply the Transfer Tape: Carefully place the transfer tape over the paint mask. Start from one edge and slowly smooth it down over the mask to avoid air bubbles. Use a burnishing tool or your fingers to press the tape firmly onto the mask. This ensures that the mask adheres well to the transfer tape.
  4. Remove the Backing: Slowly peel off the backing paper from the paint mask, leaving the mask attached to the transfer tape. If the mask lifts with the backing paper, press it back down and burnish again.
  5. Position the Mask: Position the transfer tape with the attached mask onto the desired area of the scale model. Use tweezers if necessary for precise placement.
  6. Apply the Mask: Once positioned correctly, press the mask down onto the model's surface. Start from the center and work outwards to avoid air bubbles. Use a burnishing tool or your fingers to press the mask firmly onto the model.
  7. Remove the Transfer Tape: Carefully peel off the transfer tape, ensuring the paint mask stays adhered to the model's surface. If parts of the mask lift with the tape, press them back down and peel again slowly.
  8. Check the Mask: Ensure all parts of the mask are securely adhered and there are no lifted edges.
  9. Paint the Model: Proceed with painting the model as desired. The mask will protect the underlying areas from paint.
  10. Remove the Mask: Once the paint is dry, carefully remove the mask from the model.

Additional Tips

Practice First! We provide spare practice masks for small or delicate markings so you can do a test run before final application. Using practice masks before applying the final mask is a smart approach to achieving a flawless finish on your scale model.

Work Slowly and Carefully: Precision is key in applying the mask to avoid misalignment or air bubbles.

Use Tweezers: For small or intricate masks, tweezers can help with precise placement.

Burnish Properly: Ensuring the mask is well-adhered to both the transfer tape and the model surface is crucial for a clean paint line.

⚠️USE CAUTION: To protect delicate masks when using transfer tape, reduce its stickiness by tapping it on the back of your hand a few times or using a piece of previously used tape. This prevents the tape from adhering too strongly and potentially damaging the markings.
