Product Details: Everything You Need to Know
This set includes painting masks for the main markings of a 100th Bomb Group Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress with the "Alice from Dallas" nose art, and are as accurate as possible with the limited amount of reference photos available (two). "Alice from Dallas" was a B-17F from the 100th Bomb Group. She was shot down during a raid over Regensburg on Aug 17, 1943, killing two crew members.
The set consists of masks to replicate national insignia for wings and fuselage, squadron codes and letters, serial numbers, and the (partial) "Alice from Dallas" nose art (the word "from" will need to be hand-painted as the detail is too fine to cut at this scale).
We've provided three different designs for the tail markings, as each has subtle differences derived from old images.
Images of the actual plane are almost non-existent, making it difficult to gauge the correct size of the "LNO" markings, so we provide three sizes to choose from: 8.5 mm, 12 mm, and 14 mm.
Included in the set (identified by reference #):
- 1/2/3: Tail Marking Masks (3 options)
- 4: Wing Insignia Masks
- 5/6/7: Masks for Fuselage Codes (8.5 mm)
- 8/9/10: Masks for Fuselage Codes (12 mm)
- 11/12/13: Masks for Fuselage Codes (14 mm)
- 14: Tail Code Masks
- 15: Fuselage Insignia Masks
- 16: Masks for Nose Art (+2 spares)
-
17: Fuselage Serial Number Masks (+2 spares)
Application Tips and Additional Information
➡️ Spare practice masks are provided for small or delicate markings. Check out our Paint Mask Tutorials page for a step-by-step guide on how to use and apply our masks.
➡️ We include transfer tape with this set! Transfer tape helps accurately transfer and position masks or decals onto the model's surface, maintaining alignment and design integrity while protecting the mask adhesive. Look for two 3"x6" pieces of transfer tape (clear tape with blue grid lines on a white backing) included with your masks.
How to Apply Main Markings Using Transfer Tape
➡️ Due to their size, the smallest airframe stencils may be required from the kit decal sheet as they do not cut optimally in both vinyl and Tamiya tape (see product image for clarification on what masks are provided).
➡️ Masking fluid may be required in conjunction with the masks for compound curves.
💠 Choose Your Material 💠
This Main Marking Set is available in your choice of easy-to-apply Oramask 810 flexible vinyl or a hybrid of genuine Tamiya tape and vinyl.
Why Hybrid? A hybrid set is necessary due to the delicacy and size of some components that do not cut optimally in Tamiya tape. Please refer to the product image for clarity on what components are provided in Tamiya tape and vinyl in this hybrid set. (The area highlighted in grey is provided in Oramask 810 Flexible vinyl. All other masks are supplied in Genuine Tamiya tape.)
What's better - vinyl or Tamiya tape? Both work great! Choose vinyl if you plan to use your masks right away and Tamiya tape if you're tackling your project later on. Check out our FAQ for more info!
